Start-Up Reading List
Apr 12th, 2009 by admin
I came across a question on LinkedIn yesterday that I thought would make a perfect piece here on Babeofbusiness.com. Someone asked what books folks recommended on writing business plans, evaluating the viability of ideas, coming up with market strategies, etc. – the technicalities of starting a small business. Below is a list compiled from the responses posted by LinkedIn members. You can find most of these on Amazon.com. I’ve also included links for your convenience. Please add to this list by placing your comments below. I’ll update it on an ongoing basis.
Best Books on the Technicalities of Starting a Business
Reality Check - Guy Kawasaki
The Art of the Start - Guy Kawasaki
Founders at Work - Jessica Livingston
Incorporating your Business - Michelle Cagan
Crossing the Chasm - Geoffrey Moore
Fast Track Business Growth - Andrew Sherman
Competing in the Third Wave - Jeremy Hope
Origin and Evolution of New Businesses – Amar V. Bhide
Four Steps to the Epiphany – Steven Gary Blank
Beyond Entrepreneurship - James Collins
The High Performance Entrepreneur - Subroto Bagchi
Go Kiss the World - Subroto Bagchi
High Tech Start Up - John L. Nesheim

I’m flattered to be in this list. I’d like to suggest If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland. It’s “about” writing, but has very broad implications for all entrepreneurs.

Wow, how encouraging to see such energy for entrepreneurship on the female side of the world. For bootstrap startups I recommend “Raising the Bar” an exciting read about how Clif Bars got so successful. It is an honor to be included on your list.
That’s a great list. Could I add Mike Michalowicz’s interesting book called the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur. I recently read it and thought it spoke pretty clearly to the mindset of today’s young entrepreneurs…
Thanks for this! Such a nice list of reading materials, I’ll be sure to read at least a couple, I’d been meaning to find inspirational ideas regarding business structures and case models.
