How-To Set Up an Affordable and Functional Home Office

If you are one of the millions of entrepreneurs gearing up to get your awesome business idea off the ground, you might be wondering how to affordably set up an office out of your home. On the surface, it seems like a no brainer, right? Well, there are some things to consider for making the most out of working and living under the same roof.
First off, you should try to use a spare room (if at all possible) and not set up your home office in your bedroom. This has caused many an entrepreneur to suffer from the Busy Entrepreneur Syndrome. Working and sleeping in the same space do not mix well. So consider converting a guest room or spare bedroom into your home office. Or find an extra space somewhere in your home that can be transformed into a functional working area. You’d be surprised where some entrepreneurs set up their home offices – in partitioned off spaces in game rooms or garages (preferably heated or cooled), in spaces above garages, at the top of stairs and so on. Don’t go through the expense of hiring a contractor to put an addition on your home or rework an area unless you really think it is necessary. Pick up a classy office cubicle partition or decorator-friendly portable room partition from a store like Target or Staples.
If a new desk is not in your budget, you can always improvise. Placing a flat board on top of two small file cabinets is extremely affordable and functional. I have even seen entrepreneurs use end tables or smaller dining tables. To make the most out of limited space, install some shelves behind your desk (or writing area). A tall bookshelf also acts as a nice divider and can be used to store and shelve much more than just books – like extra supplies, equipment, etc.
Consider picking up an all-in-one fax/printer/copier/scanner. This saves on the cost of buying separate machines and works well when you’re short on space. I have always been a fan of Canon multi-function machines, but my husband recently picked up a great HP model.
If you are in need of a specific item for your business, jump on eBay. Some of the best finds are waiting to be discovered here. And there’s always the possibility of swapping and bartering services and products with other companies. Don’t be shy.
Get creative entrepreneur!
