Reasons for Writing a Business Plan
Dec 8th, 2007 by admin
I’ve worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs and can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve been asked, “So, Why do I need a business plan?” Well, let’s put it this way. Do you want a successful business? Because, developing a well-thought-out and organized business plan dramatically increases your odds of succeeding as an entrepreneur. Running or starting a business without a business plan is like walking down a wooded path at night without a flashlight. You can probably go a long way using just your senses and relying on basic instincts. But operating in such a manner leaves you wide open to the risk that something will get in your way (like a competitor) and you probably won’t see it until it is too late. And just imagine all of the opportunities that are just waiting to be grasped – but without a flashlight, I mean a business plan, how will you see and take advantage of them?

I want to stop here and take a moment to shed some light on a very delicate subject. Please pass this bit of information on to all your fellow business associates, friends, family – anyone that is considering starting or that currently owns a business. All too often you hear of people looking for someone to write their business plan. Maybe a creative writer or a journalist, since these types usually have a knack for words. While written word conveys to the reader the fundamentals of a business, the plan itself is so much more. A business plan is not a document that is simply written. It is a working tool developed over time. Like a jigsaw puzzle, various pieces must be brought together for a business plan to have meaning and produce results.
