Things to Consider Before Starting a Small Business
Dec 7th, 2007 by admin
At one point or another, we have all dreamed the big dream…the dream of starting a business! But before taking the plunge, there are some points and issues to take under consideration. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Are you in a position to give up your current full or part-time job? Will you be able to meet the needs of your new business and still pay your personal bills?
- Do you have the skills and knowledge required to effectively start and operate this particular type of business?
- Are you ready and willing to commit yourself 100 percent to the pursuit, often working well beyond a typical 40-hour week?
- Is there a need for the type of product or service that you will provide?
- Who are your competitors? Are they well-established and if so, how will you compete?
- Who are your customers? How will you reach them and get the word out about your new business venture?
- Do you have sufficient cash reserves to make it through the start-up period?
- Do you have the support of your family and friends?
- What are the barriers to entry? How will you overcome them?
- Have you prepared a realistic business plan with obtainable goals?
If you find yourself answering “no” to many of these or completely stumped on how to answer or what to do, take a step back. Regroup. And seriously ask yourself if you are ready to start a small business. Success in business often depends on readiness.
